Mendocino County Sheriff’s authorities have identified the suspect in a fatal stabbing at an apartment complex north of Ukiah on Sunday night as Oscar Alvarez Carillo, 28, of Ukiah.

He is being held in the Mendocino County jail on suspicion of murder, authorities said.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

Sheriff’s deputies received a call at 6:48 p.m. Sunday about a stabbing in progress at the complex - a rundown converted motel - on North State Street, just north of Lake Mendocino Drive.

The caller identified the suspect as Alvarez Carillo, who was known to law enforcement through multiple prior contacts, authorities said.

Deputies found a man with multiple stab wounds and began life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived, but he died at the scene, authorities said.

Alvarez Carillo was tracked to a vacant home still under construction, where he barricaded himself in a room, authorities said. Deputies used a sheriff’s canine to apprehend him.

The suspect’s recent prior criminal record includes a February arrest for prowling and being under the influence of drugs. He was arrested after being held at gunpoint by a Ukiah resident who discovered the suspect opening his back door.

On Monday, neither the owner nor manager of the apartments and adjacent storage units would comment.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the sheriff’s tip line at 234-2100.
