OAKLAND - A small earthquake rumbled beneath the San Francisco Bay Area early Tuesday and was widely felt across the region.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 3.5 temblor struck at 12:40 a.m. PDT and was centered just to the east of central Oakland.

Oakland police said they had no reports of problems associated with the quake, which was fairly shallow at around three miles in depth.

The USGS website recorded responses from people reporting they felt it in many Bay Area cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.
