A Sunday night fire severely damaged the garage of a north Cloverdale home and injured a resident who tried to fight it and find his cat, according to a Cloverdale fire official.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns and was treated at a hospital and released, said Cloverdale fire Battalion Chief Rick Blackmon. The cat was found inside the master bedroom, dead of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were called to the Portofino Way home near North Jefferson Street just before 8:30 p.m. and found flames engulfing the garage adjacent to the two-story home.

They kept the flames from breaching the house, but the home was damaged from smoke and the couple living there displaced, Blackmon said.

The fire started in the garage. It remained under investigation Monday. Flames gutted the garage and burned a Volkswagen parked inside and other items including tools, causing at least $100,000 in damage.

Firefighters from Cloverdale, Cal Fire, Geyserville and Healdsburg fire districts responded.
