A Lucerne man driving on Highway 20 struck and killed an 84-year-old man crossing the road Saturday night in Upper Lake near Pomo Way, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, Douglas Williams, 56, did not see the pedestrian until the last minute, the CHP said. Williams swerved to the left to try to avoid the collision, but the right side of his 2001 Ford Escort struck the man, throwing him onto the south shoulder of the road.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity has not yet been released.

Williams, who was wearing his seatbelt and not injured, was evaluated and was not found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the CHP reported.

The accident, which occurred at 5:20 p.m. Saturday, is still under investigation.
