Sonoma County is freezing, yes, but no records shattered

Baby it’s cold outside.|

While the North Bay didn’t break any records with its below-freezing overnight lows Saturday, it did come awfully close.

The coldest temperature in Sonoma County came from just outside of Healdsburg overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning, where it dipped down to a frigid 23 degrees, said Bob Benjamin, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, which has issued a freeze warning for Sunday night into Monday morning.

“It was very cold around, that’s for sure,” Benjamin said. “Tonight is going to be another cold one. Maybe just a degree or two warmer than last night.”

Other staggeringly low temperatures - especially for a California winter - from overnight Saturday came from Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa, which tied at a low temperature of 25, according to AccuWeather, and Petaluma, which had a low of 27.

So what’s to blame?

A cold front down from the Gulf of Alaska, which also caused last week’s torrential rains.

When the cold air mass collided with the moist air that came up from the tropics, that meant condensation. And we got a lot of it.

Looking ahead, temperatures should return to normal Monday afternoon, and at the moment it’s looking like a partly cloudy Christmas, Benjamin said, with a “very slight chance” of rain Christmas night.

“Nothing looks real bad but there may or may not be a few showers,” he said.
