Sonoma County plans rallies for 'A Day Without a Woman'

Today, participants will join the rest of the nation in protests and rallies meant to bring attention to the wage gap between men and women, sexism and sexual harassment.|

After millions of women around the world took to the streets for the Women’s March on Jan. 21, organizers targeted a second day for a planned mobilization.

That comes today, on International Women’s Day. The planned actions are billed as “A Day Without a Woman,” to bring attention to the wage gap between men and women, sexism and sexual harassment - trends organizers see increasing under President Donald Trump’s policies.

National organizers want women to take the day off from paid and unpaid labor, abstain from shopping unless at a woman- or minority-owned business and wear red.

While there are hundreds of events and rallies planned across the country, there are at least four in Sonoma County:

Santa Rosa Federal Building, 777 Sonoma Ave., Santa Rosa

This noon rally, planned for International Women’s Day but not officially under the banner of “A Day Without a Woman,” coincides with the national action and is organized by Indivisible chapters in Sonoma County.

Prince Gateway Park, ?171 Santa Rosa Ave., Santa Rosa

While there has yet to be much response to the 1 p.m. rally’s Facebook announcement, the organizer calls on women to take a long lunch in the park to gather in solidarity with the national movement.

Copperfield’s Bookstore, ?775 Village Court, Santa Rosa

In recognition of International Women’s Day and “A Day Without a Woman,” Copperfield’s hosts “Women, Writing and ?Resistance in These Times” from 2-4 p.m. The event will be facilitated by Amy Elizabeth Robinson and Dani Burlison.

Sonoma Plaza, 453 First St. E, Sonoma

This 1 p.m. rally, organized in part by a Sonoma Valley High School student, will include an open mic for women and feminists.
