SRJC financial aid students targeted in scam

Santa Rosa Junior College officials warned students Friday of a telephone scam targeting recipients of financial aid that seeks personal financial information for apparently fraudulent use.

Several would-be victims have complained of callers who implied they represented the campus’ financial aid office and said they wanted to find out how they could deliver federal Pell Grant funds to the student.

The callers then sought personal information that included Social Security numbers, birth dates, credit card information and other personal data.

SRJC will never ask for this information over the phone, officials said, and students should not provide it.

Anyone receiving such a call should hang up and call campus Financial Aid at 707-527-4471 with any information about the call they may have, including the caller’s name and phone number, time and date of the call, and a brief description.

SRJC District Police have reported the scam to the Federal Trade Commission, which investigates such incidents campus officials said.
