Investigators seeking the suspect in Saturday’s armed robbery of the Walgreens on Highway 12 in Santa Rosa found him on his bedroom floor Tuesday evening with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

The unidentified man was still breathing when authorities made their way into the home in the 4100 block of Charmian Drive they had surrounded earlier Tuesday. The suspect’s injuries appeared life-threatening, Santa Rosa police said.

There had been a standoff of several hours on Charmian Drive after detectives, tipped by a source to the suspect’s possible identity, obtained a search warrant for his house in the Middle Rincon Road neighborhood, police said.

Investigators took members of the department’s SWAT and hostage negotiation teams to the residence and used a loudspeaker to repeatedly contact him and persuade him to surrender.

When he didn’t respond, authorities deployed a tactical robot with a camera, revealing him injured on the bedroom floor.

He transported by ambulance to a local hospital, police said.

His name has not been released.

A subsequent search of the house turned up several firearms, among other evidence, police said.

The original robbery occurred just before 4 a.m. at the 24-hour Walgreens on Highway 12 and Mission Boulevard, less than 1 1/2 miles from the suspect’s home.
