Two months after Paula Piveronas phoned police to report she'd shot her husband, she remains free while the Lake County District Attorney investigates the death.
"Until we know exactly what happened, we're reluctant to file charges," Lake County District Attorney Don Anderson said Friday. "We still have a lot more work to do on it."
Anderson declined to explain further, but did say that no one has alleged that Paula Piveronas was abused by her husband, Robert Piveronas, 66, a retired police officer who worked seasonally as a marine patrol deputy with the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
Paula Piveronas, 63, was arrested shortly after the Dec. 6 shooting on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a firearm and infliction of corporal injury on a spouse. She was released on bail.
She has remained free because she is not considered a flight risk, Anderson said.
Piveronas on Friday declined to comment on the shooting, saying her attorney has advised her not to discuss the case.
Anderson said he expects a charging decision will be made within the next two months.
