Terlato takes majority stake in Alderbrook

HEALDSBURG, June 27, 2001 -- Lake Bluff, Illinois-based Terlato Wine Group has taken a majority stake in Alderbrook Vineyards and Winery and is helping fund more than $5 million in enhancements to the operation.

Since February 2000, the Terlato family?s premium wine marketing company, Paterno Imports, has had a global sales and marketing contract for Alderbrook wines. Paterno has been helping Alderbrook focus its wines on Pinot Noir and Zinfandel offerings, improve packaging, and enhance its operations.

The enhancements, estimated to cost more than $5 million, include adding new tanks, upgrading fermentation equipment, buying new barrels, building a new barrel cellar, and securing new winegrape sources.

Founded in 1981, Alderbrook has 63 acres of vineyards in Dry Creek Valley. The winery makes wines from Dry Creek, Russian River Valley, and Sonoma County appellations, ranging in price from the 1998 Sangiovese Rosato at $9/bottle to the 1998 Sonoma County Reserve Zinfandel at $26/bottle.

Alderbrook is the sixth winemaking venture for Terlato Wine Group. Others include Rutherford Hill Winery in Napa Valley and Napa-based Chimney Rock Winery. Terlato?s 12 companies had combines sales of 3.1 million cases of wine in 2000.
