Colorado riders star at Infineon

SONOMA - Two Colorado riders were the stars Thursday, the first day of the 2006 USACycling National Mountain Bike Championships at Infineon Raceway.

Melissa Thomas and Travis Brown won national championships in the marathon, the first big event in the four-day schedule that is part of Infineon's Cougar Mountain Classic.

Thomas, a Boulder resident, led wire to wire in the women's race, covering eight laps around the rugged 7.7-mile course - more than 61 miles - in 5:29.36. Brown, from Durango, won the men's race in 4:38.55, pulling away from Trek/Volkswagen teammate Chris Eatough on the last lap.

Racing resumes today at Infineon with the cross country national championships - the men's race at 2 p.m. and the women's race at 4:15 - along with practice and qualifying runs for other race divisions to be contested Saturday and Sunday.
