A 52-year-old Santa Rosa man and his pit bull were killed Wednesday evening when they were struck by a suspected drunken driver on Stony Point Road just outside Santa Rosa.
The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when a white compact pickup driven by 33-year-old Andrew Tungseth of Santa Rosa drove onto the shoulder near Todd Road and struck the unidentified man and his dog at the north end of the bridge over Colgan Creek, according CHP Sgt. Jeff Abrams
The man and dog were standing 10 feet from the shoulder line when they were struck at the entrance to a trail on the creek's north bank, Abrams said.
Their bodies, covered by yellow sheets as traffic passed the scene around sunset, lay on the east side of Stony Point Road as CHP officers conducted their investigation and awaited the arrival of an investigator from the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office, Abrams said.
A shoe and sunglasses lay in the dirt near orange paint marks used by officers to indicate the vehicle's path of travel.
After the impact, the pickup plowed into two unoccupied cars parked on the east side of the road, a Chevrolet Camaro and a Honda Accord.
Tungseth was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, where he was evaluated and determined to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Abrams said.
He was expected to be booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of felony DUI later in the evening, Abrams said.
