Letter of the Day: Viva il papa

Viva il papa

EDITOR: I would like to join North Bay Catholics in the celebration of our new Pope Francis. A refreshing view on the Catholic doctrine will hopefully bring about novel ideas and philosophies.

Pope Francis is a Jesuit committed to education, social justice and Christian unity. Within his first 24 hours, he demonstrated humility and simplicity. Instead of portraying the typical king-like figure, he dressed in humble attire, without the classic mozzetta and lavish gold cross around his shoulders. Let's hope he can turn the focus of the Catholic Church onto important world issues such as poverty and injustice, rather than the recent emphasis on following rules and embracing attitudes of a pre-Vatican II church.

It is my hope that our local church leaders and parishes eagerly anticipate following in the footsteps of this Jesuit.
