EDITOR: In an interview aired Monday morning, state Sen. Mark Leno explained his rationale for proposing that the current 2 a.m. closing time for bars be extended to 4 a.m. He maintained that the current closing time encourages last-minute concentrated drinking. If I interpret his logic correctly, extending the closing time for two hours would provide a safety factor by permitting a staggered release of inebriates to our roadways. A sobering thought?
