Letter of the Day: Kicking the can

Kicking the can

EDITOR: It appears that the Sonoma County supervisors are kicking the can down the road regarding a long-term solution to trash disposal ("Landfill deal gets solid yes from supes," Wednesday). Instead of dealing with the need to find an alternate location - the landfill was to close more than 10 years ago we were told - they chose a solution that pushes the decision out so far they won't have to deal with it; future supervisors will. This resembles our federal government's handling of the nation's financial issues.

I can't understand the reasoning behind this decision. I had higher hopes for Supervisor David Rabbit, and I will have to consider long and hard regarding future votes. We will see how the supervisors handle the composting facility at the landfill - whether it stays or moves and the odors that have been developing.

Again, those of us who live out here are to be sacrificial lambs because our leaders won't do the right thing and work toward an appropriate long-term solution that doesn't degrade quality of life for anyone. A 20-to-30-year deal is not a long-term solution. There have been too many half-truths and a lack of transparency regarding the landfill.
