A hunter accidentally shot and killed a man in his hunting party in the Mendocino National Forest near Covelo on Thursday, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
Edgardo A. Godoy, 52, of Rodeo, died of a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office did not release the name of the shooter.
The hunter was aiming at a wild pig about 70 yards uphill and across a ravine when the accident occurred, according to the Sheriff's Office.
He did not see Godoy, who was wearing a camouflage jacket and was standing behind a manzanita bush, said Sgt. Jason Caudillo. Godoy had an orange safety vest with him but it was in his backpack, he said.
The hunter discovered he'd shot Godoy when he went to the location where he'd last seen the pig.
The hunter rendered aid and used his handheld radio to summon help. Other hunters in their party quickly arrived and assisted with first aid efforts, officials said.
They moved the victim to a road where medical personnel from Cal Fire and the National Forest Service arrived and continued the aid. Godoy was pronounced dead after a helicopter medical team arrived, officials said.
