Emergency workers were occcupied in Sonoma County with downed trees and wires, and car crashes on wet roads, but no major injuries were reported.
While the snow caused some havoc on roads farther north, it didn't last long.
"It's been snowing since about noon," Nancy Stipe, an administrative assistant with the Willits Fire Department, said Friday afternoon around 3:30.
"We don't have a lot on the ground. Maybe an inch or so. It could be 2 inches," she said.
Stipe said the main street in Willits was "slushy" and cars were slowing down. But she said there had been several accidents and slip outs on area roads.
"If 101 is closed, you're pretty much stuck here," she said. "Hopefully it will let up and start to melt."
The snow did stop for a while. But after another chilly day, rain and snow at higher elevations were expected to continue in Sonoma County overnight.
Mark Strudley, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service, predicted that between one-quarter and three-quarters of an inch of rain could fall by today.
By 9 p.m., Friday's storm had brought a half-inch of rain to Santa Rosa, according to the weather service. The wettest spot in Sonoma County was Monte Rio, with almost an inch.
Snow was predicted at elevations over 2,500 feet Friday night, dropping to 2,000 feet by this morning.
A mix of rain and snow could fall as low as 1,500 feet, Strudley said.
He urged caution on the roads this morning, saying, "Any moisture that falls overnight will turn into ice."
Drivers should watch out for icy patches and listen for updates on hazardous conditions, he said.
Santa Rosa was scheduled to have a low of 24 degrees this morning. The high is expected to reach only 44, according to AccuWeather.
