Brian Kennedy becomes Buck Institute's CEO

Marin County's Buck Institute for Age Research will have a new CEO Thursday.

The institute announced Monday that it has selected as its new top administrator Brian K. Kennedy, a faculty member in the University of Washington's biochemistry department.

Catherine Munson, chairwoman of the board of trustees, said the institute will benefit from Kennedy's "expertise, superb reputation and profound commitment to furthering the field of age research."

The Novato-based organization is devoted solely to research on aging and age-associated disease. It employs a staff of 191 and has an annual budget of $31.5 million.

Kennedy, 43, earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has published more than 60 manuscripts in various scientific journals and since 2006 has been an associate editor for the Journal of Gerontology.

He replaces Dr. Dale E. Bredesen, who was the founding CEO when the institute opened in 1999. Bredesen, a physician, stepped down as CEO in 2008, but he continues to conduct Alzheimers' research at the institute, said spokeswoman Kris Rebillot.
