Thousands of ballots pour into Sonoma County elections office

Tuesday is election day but mail-in voters still can turn in their ballots Monday at the Registrar of Voters Office in Santa Rosa.

Folks early Monday were dropping off ballots, either by walking in or using the drive-through ramp, said Gloria Colter, assistant registrar of voters.

About 8,000 ballots were dropped off over the weekend at several designated locations around the county.

Colter said late last week about 80,000 ballots had come in. She hadn't updated the overall count early Monday, but estimated about 60 percent of 167,000 mail-in ballots have been returned.

"We're better than half-way there," she said, of mail-in ballots.

The weekend drop-off sites no longer are open, leaving mail-in voters Monday with the option of coming by the elections office at the county administration center, 435 Fiscal Drive in Santa Rosa.

On election day, mail-in voters still can drop off at the election office or at any polling place.
