Santa Rosa police mount pedestrian, bicycle safety effort

Faced with a recent spate of fatal and serious injury pedestrian and bicycle accidents, Santa Rosa police mounted a special enforcement effort Friday afternoon that resulted in 10 citations and 24 warnings.

One bicyclist, 44-year-old Paul Perelli, of Santa Rosa, was arrested for suspicion of driving his bicycle while intoxicated on Charmian Drive in Rincon Valley, police said.

Further details of the citations weren't immediately available Saturday.

Police also provided free safety helmets to several young cyclists who were riding without, in violation of state law, authorities said.

The three-hour enforcement detail was part of a larger campaign to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in Santa Rosa, which already has logged 21 vehicle v. pedestrian crashes in 2011, including three fatal incidents, traffic Sgt. Rich Celli said.

Eighteen additional accidents involved injuries, he said.

There also have been 15 vehicle v. bicycle collisions in Santa Rosa this year, Celli said.

Uniformed officers involved in Friday's enforcement focused on crosswalks and other areas with heavy pedestrian and bicycle use.

Additional efforts will be conducted in the future through grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
