Police are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoon.
The woman was shot in the abdomen shortly before 2 p.m. on the 900 block of Clark Street southeast of the downtown. Police were looking for a suspected assailant, who is believed to have fled in a gray Nissan Versa.
The man is described as a black male, possibly 6-feet-one inches tall, and weighing about 180 pounds.
The woman, who neighbors said lived in a one-bedroom granny unit on the street, was not identified by police. Neighbors described her as being in her 50s.
"I don't know her personally, I just see her all the time," said neighbor Alex Boston.
After hearing a gunshot, Boston and a second neighbor, Jay Johnson, both saw the suspect run down the driveway and get into his car before speeding down Clark Street.
The man sped west on Clark and passed two cars waiting at the stop sign at South E Street and turned north toward downtown, Johnson said.
"Clearly something was happening," Johnson said.
Boston said he had seen the man on Clark Street before, often wearing athletic pants, a t-shirt and fitted baseball hat.
Boston and Johnson walked down the driveway and approached the granny unit. The door was open, according to Johnson.
"We were shouting and yelling, &‘Hey is everybody okay in there?'" Johnson said.
The woman emerged with the towel pressed to her stomach.
"She came out of the house with a towel, bleeding everywhere," Boston said. "You saw blood coming down. Her skin was getting kind of pale."
Investigators were preparing to interview the woman when she came out of surgery.
