Firefighters report Glen Ellen's first wildland fire of season

Glen Ellen firefighters Saturday night responded to their first wildland fire of the season, reported Chief Peter Van Fleet Monday.

The fire was on rural Henno Road, about a half-mile from Warm Springs Road and Arnold Drive. It was reported at 9:11 p.m.

The small fire started just off the roadway in grass and spread up a hill, burning about a quarter acre, the chief said.

Cal Fire investigators attempted to learn what started the fire but couldn't determine a cause, he said.

"It's kind of early to start the season," Van Fleet said.

"What was notable this year was it was so dry, we had wildland fires in January," he said.

Late spring rains turned the hillsides green, eliminating the risk of wildland fires. But now the grass and brush are starting to dry.

About a dozen Glen Ellen volunteers responded to the fire.

Cal Fire firefighters also responded. The state's Glen Ellen station isn't yet staffed for the fire season so forestry firefighters came from their Petaluma station, the chief said.
