Mendocino jury convicts two San Francisco men of abalone poaching

A Mendocino County jury has found two San Francisco residents guilty of poaching abalone at the Mendocino bluffs near the town of Mendocino.

Hou N. Huang, 47, was convicted on Friday of excessive taking of abalone, according to the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office. Hong Mei, 39, was found guilty of unlawful possession of abalone.

Each was sentenced to 24 months of probation. Huang also was sentenced to 15 days in jail and fined $2,545. Mei was sentenced to five days in jail and fined $1,499. They are prohibited from fishing while on probation.

Huang was accused of harvesting 14 abalone, keeping 9 and dividing them among himself and two others to make it appear they each had the legal limit, 3, according to the District Attorney's Office.
