A young Sebastopol man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs was arrested early Tuesday after his pickup drifted into the path of an SUV and caused a head-on crash on Stony Point Road, the CHP reported.
The driver of the other vehicle, Vicki Siefer, 46, of Novato suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Stanford Medical Center in critical condition, the CHP said.
CHP officers arrested Ben Rhoades, 19, but released him to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital because of his injuries. He was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.
Both drivers suffered broken bones and internal injuries.
At about 8:30 a.m. Rhoades was driving south on Stony Point Road in heavy fog. Just south of West Sierra Avenue his Ford F-250 crossed double yellow lines and hit the Ford Edge.
The truck flipped onto its side and the SUV was shoved backward, demolished by the impact.
Both drivers had to be freed from their vehicles.
Getting the woman out was one of the most complicated extrication efforts Rancho Adobe firefighters have faced, said Battalion Chief Steve Davidson.
Part of the upper half of her body was outside of the wrecked vehicle but her legs were trapped inside.
Firefighters had to cut parts of the car away to get her legs untangled from the wreckage. It took about 45 minutes to free her, Davidson said.
Rhoades' truck was on its right side. Firefighters cut through the windshield to pull him out. It took about 30 minutes to remove him.
Rhoades' injuries were not expected to be life threatening.
Stony Point Road was closed for about 90 minutes and traffic was diverted.
