Collapsed culvert causes gaping hole in Stony Point Road

A gaping hole closed Stony Point Road in Cotati Sunday after a culvert collapsed during the vigorous storm.

The 48-inch culvert caved in and left behind a 10-foot hole in the roadway in front of the Sports City indoor soccer complex south of Highway 116 near Madrone Avenue, county officials said.

The hole was reported just before 1 p.m.

Southbound motorists were directed off Stony Point Road at Madrone Avenue, looping back to Stony Point on Grove and West Sierra avenues.

Northbound drivers were directed to the same detour in reverse.

County road engineers were assessing the damage.

County officials contracted a trench plate company to determine if they can place large plates over the hole to reopen the road until permanent repairs can be made.

The road will remain closed until that decision is made.

It remained unclear whether repairs will take hours or days.
