Authorities investigate Guerneville attack as possible hate crime

Sonoma County Sheriff's detectives are investigating a possible hate crime that occurred June 26 near a popular bar in Guerneville.

The victim, who is described by officials a 49-year-old local resident, contacted Sheriff's deputies in Guerneville June 28 to report the incident.

The victim, whose name is not being released, told deputies that he was attacked at about 11:30 p.m. on 3rd Street by "unknown individuals," and that at least one of them used "anti-gay threats and slurs during the assault," according to a report.

The victim received scrapes and abrasions in the attack. The Sheriff's Office said the assault is being investigated as a hate crime and a possible violation of the victim's civil rights under the U.S. Constitution.

No further information was available Saturday morning.
