Driver with meth pipe escapes Lake County crash

A driver spotted holding a meth pipe in his hand led Lake County CHP officers on a chase before he crashed into a power pole, sheering it off and knocking down power lines.

The man ran from the Highway 29 crash near Kelseyville Sunday evening and remained at large Monday, said the CHP.

The officers were responding to a crash on the rural highway north of Cobb at about 5:50 p.m. when they saw the pipe-holding driver in a grey 1995 Mitsubishi SUV, the CHP said.

Officers waved and yelled at him to stop but he kept driving, eventually getting up to about 85 mph. He turned off the highway and lost control on Live Oak Drive at Cruickshank Road and hit the pole.

The man ran away, disappearing into a nearby mobile home park. He escaped a search that included a police dog.

The intersection was closed for most of the night as PG&E and AT&T crews responded to fix the line problems, said the CHP.

The initial crash involved an overturned SUV with a woman and two children flown to hospitals with reportedly minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Driver Tabitha Martinez, 31, of Clearlake was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The children, ages 7 and 8, were flown to Oakland Children's Hospital, although only one reportedly had minor injuries, according to the CHP.
