Letter of the Day: Memorable landslide

Memorable landslide

EDITOR: While I can't argue with most of the points made in Thomas J. Vecchio's letter discussing the current direction of Republican politics ("Lessons from the fringe," Oct. 26), I must dispute his assertion that the defeat of Barry Goldwater by Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 presidential election was "the biggest landslide in history."

As a Massachusetts native, I'm still rather proud that the Bay State was the only state (along with the District of Columbia) to give its electoral votes to George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election against Richard Nixon. We all know how that Republican administration turned out.
