Hunter accidentally shot on opening day of deer season

A hunter was accidentally shot Saturday morning by one of his companions in a remote part of Napa County north of Lake Berryessa.

The 70-year-old Sacramento man was shot on the opening day of deer season when one of the other hunters in his party dropped his rifle, the Napa Sheriff’s Department reported./

“The firearm was accidentally dropped and a round went off and struck him in the head,” said Napa Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Carlisle.

The victim was identified as Margarito Vazquez.

The incident took place about 15 miles north of Lake Berryessa, near the Yolo County line.

A CHP helicopter landed nearby and was able to transport the injured man to a local trauma center. He was reported to be in serious, but stable condition.
