Bay Bridge bicycle lane named for bike advocate

SAN FRANCISCO - The bicycle lane on the new Bay Bridge has been named in honor of a bike advocate who died of injuries he suffered during a fall while riding on the old span.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1dMDtQw) Oakland Mayor Jean Quan was among those who attended a ceremony Tuesday to dedicate the bike path to Alex Zuckermann, founder of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition and the man credited for persuading Caltrans to build the path.

Zuckerman, a former Oakland city planner, was 86 when he died in 2007 of injuries sustained while riding his bike with Caltrans officials when the bridge was closed for seismic work.

Zuckerman's sons, Dave and Ron, led a group of cheering, bell-ringing cyclists in an inaugural ride on the path.
