Sonoma County sheriff’s detectives are investigating a suspected armed robbery in Glen Ellen of a man who told deputies he was held up at gunpoint in a market parking lot, assaulted and then chased by robbers before he got away, officials said Wednesday.

The man said he was outside the Glen Ellen Grocery at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday when three males came up to him - one holding a semiautomatic handgun, sheriff’s Lt. Al Vernon said in a news release.

They demanded his wallet and, during a brief struggle between the victim and the armed male, the victim was hit on the head with the gun, Vernon said.

The victim, who wasn’t identified, tried to get away by getting into his truck and driving. But he told deputies the three robbers got into another vehicle and followed closely behind him, Vernon said.

The victim said he got out of his truck on nearby Gibson Street and ran, followed on foot by the three. At 9:20 p.m., a 911 caller from Glen Ellen told dispatchers a man was in her yard yelling that he was being robbed and threatened with a gun.

A search of the neighborhood by deputies, CHP officers and a police dog turned up no sign of the males, Vernon said.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his head wound.
