Hike set to celebrate new North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park

The Monday event will start with a 2 p.m. commemoration, including speakers representing Sonoma County and other park partners. The hike starts at 3 p.m.|

Sonoma County representatives will celebrate the opening of the new 820-acre North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve on Monday with a guided hike kicked off by remarks from Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Susan Gorin and other officials.

The commemoration, which is open to the public, begins at 2 p.m. Monday at 5297 Sonoma Mountain Road in Santa Rosa. The hike starts at 3 p.m.

The preserve is located about three miles up Sonoma Mountain, and offers visitors access to 4.5 miles of new trials and scenic views of Santa Rosa, Sonoma Valley and beyond. The site opened to the public last month.

Monday’s event will recap the dozen years spent on property acquisition and planning by county and state open space officials. The county Open Space District spent about $20 million for five of the six properties that constitute the preserve, starting in 2003 with the purchase of the 169-acre Jacobs Ranch site.

The ranch is now the park’s entrance, where visitors park and pay a day-use fee of $7. Access is free to Regional Parks members.
