A man who accidentally shot himself in the hand was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, Sonoma County sheriff’s officials said.

Francisco Javier Yanez, 20, of Santa Rosa shot himself with an illegal short-barreled shotgun while two children were at the Ludwig Avenue home, Sgt. Cecile Focha said. A caller reporting the shooting led deputies and an ambulance crew to the home at about 10 a.m. Monday on the western outskirts of Santa Rosa, but Yanez was gone, Focha said. Deputies found him at a hospital and, once treated, booked him into the Sonoma County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, the sergeant said.

He was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment and illegal weapon possession, Focha said. He was not in custody at the jail Tuesday.
