Sonoma County mothers, back in the day
Some trace the roots of Mother’s Day back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals honoring the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.
The first American Mother’s Day was held in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, in Grafton, W. Va.
Her efforts led to a national campaign to make the day a holiday, and in 1914, she succeeded.
This year, we honor all mothers with historic photos of some of our area’s earliest residents. Famous or not, we recognize the contributions of these women in shaping generations to come.
