A 72-year-old Santa Rosa man suffered major injuries Friday when he crashed his motorcycle into the back of a flatbed trailer in west Sonoma County, the CHP said.

The crash happened about 11 a.m. on Valley Ford Road, west of Roblar Road, Officer Jon Sloat said.

George Evankovich was riding eastbound on Valley Ford Road on a 2003 Harley-Davidson behind a pickup towing the trailer, Sloat said.

When the truck slowed to make a right turn, he was unable to avoid running into the back of the trailer and was thrown from the motorcycle, Sloat said.

His speed was not immediately known. Sloat said the trailer did not have working taillights.

Evankovich was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by helicopter with major injuries that were not life-threatening. Officers briefly shut the road so the helicopter could land.
