Memorial service for retired Press Democrat editor Art Volkerts set

Family and friends of Art Volkerts will celebrate his life at Community Church of Sebastopol.|

A celebration of the life of retired Press Democrat editor Art Volkerts begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Community Church of Sebastopol.

Volkerts died Saturday on the family ranch in the Hessel area southwest of Sebastopol on which he was born. He was 96.

A member of the Analy High School Class of 1938, Volkerts joined the news staff of The Press Democrat in 1948. He became managing editor in 1955 and was named editor in 1972.

He retired in 1986. He and his wife and former high-school sweetheart, Tess (Garrison) Volkerts, celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary three weeks ago.

Community Church of Sebastopol is at 1000 Gravenstein Highway North.
