SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police say a man in his 20s suffered life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed during a fight in United Nations plaza in downtown San Francisco.

Sgt. Michael Andraychak says that about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, a man in his 50s got into a fight with the victim. Andraychak says the older man stabbed the younger man several times.

He says bystanders helped to stop the attack and called police, who arrested the older man.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

Andraychak says the suspected attacker had a hand wound that police say was caused by his own knife. He is being treated at a hospital.

The suspected attacker is expected to be charged with attempted murder.
