The 20-year-old homeless man shot dead last week in Ukiah following an argument about his rummaging through a dumpster was identified Monday as De’Shaun Davis.

Davis was shot at least once with a large-caliber handgun Nov. 21 by 62-year-old Steven Ryan, who claimed self-defense.

Ryan told investigators he had argued with Davis about trespassing on a Vichy Springs Road property where Ryan rented a home. Following the shooting, Ryan was one of the people to call 911.

But investigators didn’t feel that Davis posed a significant enough threat to justify Ryan’s actions, and arrested him on suspicion of murder. He remained in custody Monday with a bail of $1 million.

An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death and the full extent of Davis’ injuries.
