Two people were injured Thursday morning in a Santa Rosa apartment fire that killed several pets and caused $150,000 in damage, firefighters said.

The fire was reported about 3:50 a.m. in the eight-unit complex in 600 block of Derico Court, Battalion Chief Mark Basque said.

Engines arrived within minutes to find the garage, attic and two vehicles engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished before it could spread to other apartments.

The occupants, three adults and an 11-year-old child, were able to escape. One man had burns to his face and hands while a woman suffered burns on her torso.

Firefighters recovered three cats and a rabbit from inside the home. Two of the cats died because of smoke inhalation.

The cause appears to be accidental and is under investigation.

American Red Cross officials were providing assistance to the displaced family.
