Man who died abalone diving off Mendocino Coast identified

A man who died Saturday morning while diving along the Mendocino Coast has been identified as Steve Nguyen, 58, of Oakland, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency officials responded at 8:40 a.m. to a report of an abalone diver in distress at Bowling Ball Beach near Point Arena, Sheriff's officials said. Nguyen was pulled from the water in a rocky area but died despite lifesaving efforts, officials said. The cause of his death is not yet available.
