Fire heavily damages home northeast of Ukiah

A structure fire northeast of Ukiah heavily damaged a single-family home on Deerwood Drive just before midnight Friday.

Though the fire did not completely destroy the home, it caused a partial roof collapse and enough structural damage that it will likely have to be demolished, said fire engineer Tom Fletcher of the Hopland Fire Protection District.

Fire crews from Hopland, Ukiah Valley and Redwood Valley-Calpella responded to the fire, which was first reported about 11:45 p.m. When the first crews arrived, the home was already engulfed in flames.

The neighborhood, built in the 1960s or 70s, sits amid a thick clusters of trees the east end of Ukiah’s urban interface, Fletcher said.

Firefighters spent the entire morning fighting the blaze and making sure it didn’t spread to other homes in the area. Ukiah Valley Fire Authority officials are leading the investigation into the cause of the fire, which has yet to be determined.
