Santa Rosa police arrested a man late Thursday suspected of robbing the convenience store earlier in the morning at the 76 Gas Station on the northeast corner of Piner Road and Coffey Lane.
Kwanza Houston, 42, of Santa Rosa, was arrested while trying to flee the Extended Stay Inn Hotel on Fountaingrove Parkway after detectives tracked him there based on leads. Police contacted Houston as he entered his car but he tried to drive away until other police vehicles blocked his exit. He tried to flee but was captured.
Detectives found a loaded firearm, which was believed used in the robbery, along with clothing the suspect was believed to have worn. Money was also recovered in his vehicle, a dark gray Volkswagen Jetta.
Police said the gunman came into the store shortly before 8:30 a.m. and brandished a handgun he pointed at store clerks, before demanding cash from their registers and fleeing.
Houston was arrested on suspicion of robbery, a felon in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and probation violations. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
