San Francisco set to get water taxi service

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco is set to get its first water taxi service.

The San Francisco Port Commission on Tuesday approved a five-year agreement with John Scannell. Scannell currently runs duck boats for tourists through his company Bay Quackers and plans to launch the taxi service within the next two to three months.

Scannell tells KTVU-TV the taxis will run along the San Francisco waterfront but also across the Bay to Marin and Oakland.

The vessels will vary in size to accommodate individuals or groups. They will leave from either Pier 1? or the Hyde Street Pier and will be available on demand.

A one-way fare from San Francisco to Oakland will cost about $18.

Scannell has agreed to pay the port 7 percent of his revenues.
