Two men were arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of trying to steal marijuana plants growing in a Petaluma backyard, police said.

The suspected theft happened at about 3:55 a.m. at a home in the 2000 block of I Street, Lt. Tim Lyons said.

A caller said two men were in his backyard and he hit one over the head with a metal pipe, Lyons said.

One of the suspects dropped a gun and knife before both men fled, Lyons said.

Zack Fortune, 20, of Petaluma was arrested nearby in a Chevy pickup, Lyons said. He told officers he was in the area to give a ride to a friend who had been jumped, Lyons said.

No one else was in the pickup, Lyons said, but officers found a hat with blood on it.

At about 6:45 a.m., Todd Frost, 18, also of Petaluma, checked into Petaluma Valley Hospital with a head injury, Lyons said.

Frost was suspected of being involved in the incident.
