Gun seized in traffic stop on Highway 101

A Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy and CHP officers seized a gun from a 22-year-old Santa Rosa man who was arrested early Friday on suspicion of intoxicated driving and resisting arrest during a traffic stop.

The deputy pulled over a Toyota Avalon at about 3 a.m. after watching the car weave between lanes while heading onto southbound Highway 101 from West College Avenue, Sheriff’s Sgt. Cecile Focha said in a statement.

The driver, Johnny Sanez, did not immediately stop for the patrol car, which was following with lights flashing and the siren on for about a mile, Focha said. He pulled over near Highway 12, nearly hitting a concrete pillar off the road’s shoulder, she said. Sanez was unable to perform any field sobriety tests due to his level of intoxication, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The deputy saw a bag of marijuana in the car and found a .38-caliber revolver underneath the driver’s seat and a bag with more than 30 rounds of .38-caliber ammunition, Focha said. The pistol was not registered to Sanez.

Sanez was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on $20,000 bail on suspicion of possessing a concealed firearm in a vehicle, resisting arrest and intoxicated driving.
