Another fire, this one in northern Sonoma County

In northern Sonoma County, at least 1,000 acres were burning north of Geyserville toward The Geysers without containment, according to Cal Fire.

The fire was burning off Pocket Ranch Road and Ridge Ranch Road, east of Cloverdale.

The fire was burning in rugged, open territory of grass and brush and scattered homes, but it was headed for tougher landscape with steep canyons in its path, according to Cal Fire.

Known as the Pocket fire, it is the smallest of several major fires in the region, including more than 25,000 acres burning between Calistoga and a huge swath of Santa Rosa. Cal Fire and local fire agencies were stretched thin with all of the area blazes.

A fire official said an update would be available Monday night.

Ashes were in the air in Healdsburg, but no evacuations were ordered or anticipated.

Sonoma County Supervisor James Gore, who represents the north county, said he heard of a couple who were at one point stuck in the mountains outside Geyserville, trapped on a boat in the middle of a pond with fire all around them. The couple’s daughter contacted Gore through Facebook pleading for help and a chopper to rescue them, after which Gore helped reach out to emergency dispatchers, he said.

“I just got word that they’re safe,” he said. “Small victories. Small reassurances.”
