A 64-year-old registered sex offender was in custody Wednesday, suspected of having images of child pornography on his cellphone and drugs for sale, according to Santa Rosa police.

James Michael Grippe of Santa Rosa was being held in lieu of $60,000 bail in the Sonoma County Jail.

Officers arrested him Friday when he came to the police station for his annual sex offender registration. Grippe was previously convicted of sex‑related crimes including possessing child pornography, Sgt. Terry Anderson said in a news release.

Detectives began investigating Grippe in December when a cellphone, believed to be his, was turned into police containing obscene pictures of children, Anderson said.

Following Grippe’s arrest, detectives searched his home and found an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and drug sale items, Anderson said.
