ALTADENA - Authorities say a charred body has been found on Mount Wilson northeast of Los Angeles, where crews working in steep terrain are trying to surround a smoldering wildfire.

Sheriff's Sgt. Vincent Plair says the male body discovered late Wednesday was recovered by the coroner's office, which will try to make an identification.

Firefighters are making slow but steady progress against the blaze that broke out Tuesday near the 5,710-foot (1,740-meter) peak. It had burned 50 acres of brush and timber and was 35 percent contained by Wednesday night.

Crews using water-dropping aircraft protected the famous Mount Wilson observatory and a facility that houses critical broadcast and communications antennas for the Los Angeles region. The fire did not burn near foothill homes.
