George Zimmerman just can’t escape the headlines, as much as we wish he would. Zimmerman, a wannabe cop acting as a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, shot and killedan unarmed Florida teenager named Trayvon Martin in 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder charges after a sensational trial that shined a spotlight on Florida’s don’t-back-down law, an ill-advised statute that encourages vigilante justice.

Since then, Zimmerman has had several more run-ins with the law and once found himself the target of a shooter in an apparent road-rage incident. Zimmerman wasn’t hurt. The most recent headlines involve Zimmerman’s attempts to auction off the handgun used to kill Martin. The auction resumed Monday with a requested opening bid of $100,000 and a “buy-it-now” price of $500,000 after an earlier attempt produced fake bids for astronomically high amounts.

There’s a name for the trade in items from high-profile criminal cases: murderabilia. Or you could just call it what it is: profiteering off lives needlessly lost. Thumbs down.
