The Sonoma County Sol will host the visiting Burlingame Dragons Wednesday in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open tournament.

Burlingame, in its inaugural season in the Premier Development League, is an affiliate of the San Jose Earthquakes.

The massive U.S. Open tournament begins today with 21 first-round matches being played in 15 states.

Tonight’s match marks the first time the Sol, a semipro team in the National Premier Soccer League made up almost entirely of players who suited up for local high schools, Santa Rosa Junior College or Sonoma State, has made the tournament since 2010. In its four previous appearances, the team’s best finish was in 2006 when it advanced to the second round.

The Sol, 4-1, currently sits in first place in the Golden Gate Conference of the National Premier Soccer League.
